Fifty years ago, in a small, fragile spacecraft designed for only one purpose—landing on the Moon—two American astronauts prepared to fly that spacecraft from its 10 mile high orbit above the Moon down to a landing on the Sea of Tranquility. It was a sea in name only. It was actually a bone dry, ancient dusty basin pockmarked with craters and littered with rocks and boulders. Somewhere in that 500 mile diameter basin, the astronauts would attempt to make Mankind’s first landing on the Moon.Neil Armstrong would pilot the Lunar Module “Eagle” during its twelve minute descent from orbit down to a landing. Col. Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin would assist him. On the way down they would encounter a host of problems, any one of which could have potentially caused them to have to call off the landing, or, even worse, die making the attempt. The problems were all technical-communications problems, computer problems, guidance problems, sensor problems. Armstrong and Aldrin faced the very real risk of dying by the very same technical sword that they had to live by in order to accomplish the enormous task of landing on the Moon for the first time.Yet the human skills Armstrong and Aldrin employed would be more than equal to the task. Armstrong’s formidable skills as an aviator, honed from the time he was a young boy, would serve him well as he piloted Eagle down amidst a continuing series of systems problems that might have fatally distracted a lesser aviator. Armstrong’s brilliant piloting was complemented by Aldrin’s equally remarkable discipline and calmness as he stoically provided a running commentary on altitude and descent rate while handling systems problems that threatened the landing. Finally, after a harrowing twelve and a half minutes, Armstrong gently landed Eagle at “Tranquility Base”, a name he had personally chosen to denote the location of the first Moon landing. In “Landing Eagle-Inside the Cockpit During the First Moon Landing”, author Mike Engle gives a minute by minute account of the events that occurred throughout Eagle’s descent and landing on the Moon. Engle, a retired NASA engineer and Mission Control flight controller, uses NASA audio files of actual voice recordings made inside Eagle’s cockpit during landing to give the reader an “inside the cockpit” perspective on the first Moon landing. Engle’s transcripts of these recordings, along with background material on the history and technical details behind the enormous effort to accomplish the first Moon landing, give a new and fascinating insight into the events that occurred on that remarkable day fifty years ago.

  • Engel has written a fascinating and gripping story of the first lunar landing, making the dry, technical jargon easy to understand for us non-engineers. I highly recommend it!
  • Decent summary of audio from inside lunar module Eagle down to the first lunar landing.
  • This book based on newly released transcripts of astronaut conversations was very interesting. I liked the very logical step by step approach and the "inside the cockpit " perspective.
  • Incredible insight into the lunar landing and what went into it. Highly recommend!!

In 1505, Michelangelo (1475–1564) began planning the magnificent tomb for Pope Julius II, which would dominate the next forty years of his career. Repeated failures to complete the monument were characterized by Condivi, Michelangelo’s authorized biographer, as “the tragedy of the tomb.” This definitive book thoroughly documents the art of the tomb and each stage of its complicated evolution. Authored by Christoph Luitpold Frommel, who also acted as the lead consultant on the recent restoration campaign, this volume offers new post-restoration photography that reveals the beauty of the tomb overall, its individual statues, and its myriad details.

This book traces Michelangelo’s stylistic development; documents the dialogue between the artist and his great friend and exacting patron Pope Julius II; unravels the complicated relationship between the master and his assistants, who executed large parts of the design; and sheds new light on the importance of neoplatonism in Michelangelo’s thinking.

A rich trove of documents in the original Latin and archaic Italian relates the story through letters, contracts, and other records covering Michelangelo’s travels, purchase of the marble, and concerns that arose as work progressed. The book also catalogues fifteen sculptures designed for the tomb and more than eighty related drawings, as well as an extensive and up-to-date bibliography.

Mythos Audible Audio Edition Stephen Fry Penguin Books Ltd Books Reviews

  • It's been a very long time since I've enjoyed a book as much I have this one. Mythos is a beautiful retelling of the Greek myths that is absolutely endearing. Within the first few pages, I knew that this is the book I would like someone to read to me on my death bed. Astoundingly well written.
  • Audio retelling of the myths -- with Fry's POV and insights, is an excellent audio book -- although, if you aren't remembering your mythology clearly, the first disk about the Titans, chucked full of information, is a bit dry and requires careful listening to get through. But on Disk 2, beginning with the story of the rise of Zeus, Fry's thoughts and interjections come through and add interest to the retelling of these stories and his perspective. Recommend highly!
  • Mr Fry is one of the authors I follow and I was excited to find this unexpected gem from him. I was used to his memoirs and contemporary tales and Mythos was a pleasant surprise.

This is a wItty, beautifully written and intelligent reselling of these tales that I know so well from Robert Graves books, and I spent a delightful time with my May favorite characters from Greek Mythology who came to life in this wonderful book.

I am a huge fan of Stephens writing and I anticipated this would be great, and he certainly has not disappointed in any way.

If you want to revisit these stories or would like to explore the myths that certainly are intrinsic to the western world in so many ways, allow Stephen Fry to take you on this wonderful journey.

    I loved this book.
  • What a joy to read a coherent and clearly well researched story about the very naughty Greek gods written by one of the best intellectual minds out there. No matter what your beliefs, this is a romp you cannot fail to enjoy, Stephen Fry's prose as alive with mischief as the characters. You will have a smile on your face all the way through.
  • Since childhood, I have enjoyed reading about Greek mythology when my parents gave me my first book. The retelling of the myths by Stephen Fry is captivating. I bought this book because I find Stephen Fry on his show QI to be able to explain things in such a way to make even the most mundane or unbelievable subject enjoyable. I made a good choice to read the book, before listening to the audiobook of Mythos. You will not be disappointed.
  • Clarity, deep knowledge, humor, in a serious but not stuffy treatment of the stories that illustrated wisdom and virtue, and their opposites for the great culture and the poeople who laid the foundation for western civilization. If you have any interest in Greek mythology and what it has given us, I can't think of a better place to start. Not only does Mr. Fry know his stuff, but he knows how to engage the reader, hold his interest and then satisfy him or her. I'll certainly read it again.
  • Great book, at a great price, and given where it needed to travel from, it was delivered fast. Prior to its estimate, and just in time for my husband to take with him on his next trip.

He downloads lots of books to read and uses Audible, too. But sometimes, he just wants to hold a real book and read where he has no phone charge, or where he can't (or won't) take his phone. The beach, certain workplaces where phones aren't allowed, etc.

The only negative is that the cardboard envelope this was mailed in, got wet once it was put into and stuck out a little from the mailbox. The book was fine, but the receipt with it was not. Easily might've been the book that suffered, as the cardboard was wet all the way through and to the other side.
  • Book is beautiful. Shipping was great; however, the book reeks of sulfur and I cannot get rid of it. I have tried everything suggested by anyone who knows anything about books, and nothing works. The smell is so potent and overpowering that I can’t stand it have it around. It’s in a ziplock bag and living out in my garage right now. I’m not sure what has caused this nauseating smell, but it has made the book unreadable.

Under the Trestle is the true story of the most compelling murder case in Virginia history. In 1980, beautiful Gina Renee Hall, a Radford University freshman, went to a Virginia Tech nightclub on a Saturday night. She was never seen again. Her abandoned car was found parked beneath a railroad trestle bridging the New River, with blood in the trunk. The investigation led police to a secluded cabin on Claytor Lake, where there was evidence of a violent attack. Former Virginia Tech football player Stephen Epperly was charged with murder, despite the fact that Gina's body was never found.

In Virginia's "trial of the century", prosecutor Everett Shockley presented an entirely circumstantial case. Key witnesses against Epperly included his best friend, his mother, and a tracking dog handler later believed by many to be a fraud. Three former Virginia Tech football players testified, including a Hokies quarterback once featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Would Epperly become the first person in Virginia history convicted of murder without the victim's body, an eyewitness, or a confession? And would authorities ever find the body of Gina Renee Hall?

  • There's a reason why so many reviews of this book include the words "I remember" the case was memorable in itself. I was a child in Roanoke at the time of Gina Hall's disappearance, but I read the newspapers, even at that age, and the thought of this girl being killed and her body never found saddened me. I moved to Pulaski County as an adult and have continued to wonder whether her remains will ever come to light.

This is a well-researched, well-organized, clearly-written account of the facts known about Gina Hall's disappearance, as well as the investigation and court proceedings involved. I've come to know some of the law enforcement and legal personnel involved in the case over the past 20+ years, and I can say that the author's presentation of the people I know personally seems accurate. His descriptions of the geography and local norms likewise seem true to life.

This book is generally written in a journalistic style fairly common to "true crime" stories, with occasional lapses of ascribing emotion or thoughts to people who, because they were either dead or imprisoned, were not available to be interviewed directly by the author. I'm not troubled by the author's assertion that, for example, Trooper Hall had a sinking feeling; it's clear that the author spoke directly to him. I'd rather not read about the suspect's emotion or lack thereof, when we do not know what he was thinking or feeling; I'd like to see, rather, that the suspect's facial expression implied a certain thought. The book is, further, marred by multiple grammatical errors and spelling inconsistencies, and frequently there are awkwardly phrased sentences that make me long to line-edit it myself.

All the same, it's a very detailed, thorough, and *relatively* unbiased look at this case which held so much heartache and controversy, which set precedent in Virginia for the trial of a murder case without a body, and which still captures the minds of people who remember a summer forty years ago, when a Radford University student went missing. She stayed missing, and she's still missing -- and we still remember. Under the Trestle is worth reading.
  • I haven't read a book that had me as spell bound as this in a couple of decades! Ron Peterson captured the essence of this tragedy that unfolded in my homestate with just the right amount of detail and at just the right pace. I hope that this book breathes new life into the investigation and that Gina is found. Great job Ron Peterson!
  • I grew up just across the New River, in Pulaski County, and was just under one year old when this event took place. This is the one story that had always been a constant in my life. I've always heard about Gina Hall, and her disappearance/murder. It wasn't something that was constantly talked about, but it would be brought up every now and then, generally when Stephen Epperly would come up for parole. I am still in the process of reading "Under the Trestle", I've had it about a week now, and if my schedule would allow, I definitely would have read it all in one setting. Also purchased a copy for my mom, and she read it all in one day. Mr. Peterson really brought the whole case to life for me. Absolutely fascinating story, and I hope and pray that Gina's body will be found one day so that her family can finally have peace.
  • And well written true crime book. Simultaneously heart wrenching and anger inducing. The investigation into this case was very well done and a young prosecutor had the courage to bring a man to trial without a body, which had never been done in the state of Virginia before and set precedent for future cases. The anger part comes from the fact that the perpetrator had gone to trial twice for rape accusations and was acquitted both times before he murdered the young woman portrayed in the book. Dated references to the victims beauty as opposed to her potential and way too much religious reliance on “good Christian people” , meaning they were automatically assumed to be untouchable, is offensive. But that was Virginia back then and probably still is. It takes on a whole different meaning in our current times but the victims family appear to be what Christianity is supposed to be about and their grief is heartbreaking
  • On June 29, 1980, Gina Hall went to nightclub. She loved to dance. When she failed to return to the apartment she shared with her sister, it was clear that something was wrong.

Police investigating the missing person case learned that she had left the club with a young man, they knew from the description who they were looking for.

This is an intriguing case told in an easy-to-understand style. I felt as though I was part of the investigating team. There are many aspects to this case, some of them setting precedents in the legal world years before the advent of DNA.

    156
  • One of the best true crime stories ever written. Ron does a masterful job of laying out this entire story and tying together everything and everyone involved. Guaranteed you won’t be able to put it down once you start reading.
One of the best things about this book is how it’s organized to recount the details. This book is a must read!
  • I remember following this story in the newspapers as it unfolded. I had Steve Epperly as a substitute teacher on 2 occasions in high school. When I heard he was a suspect I was not surprised, he would go from congenial to irate in seconds and it was always an over reaction. I pray that the public doesn't forget Gina and that one day she will be found. I would definitely recommend this book.
  • This happened when I was 8 years old in the area I was raised. I grew up hearing about it and have even seen the cabin it took place in. I really enjoyed the book. It was very informative and really makes you think. I don't even know the man Steve Epperly but there is no doubt in my mind he did it..... They won't even parole him and he's had to be moved multiple times. So I'm sure he had some major issues. And to with hold her body from her Family is Unforgivable!!! She did not deserve this ( Goes to show you some people in this world are PURE EVIL!!!!!!

Finding Her Forever Family edition by Traci Douglass Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • FINDING HER FOREVER FAMILY by Traci Douglass is a Harlequin contemporary medical romance set in the same Alaskan hospital as this author’s previous medical romance, One Night with the Army Doc. This is an extremely emotional romance with an O.B. doctor, single dad and an E.R. trauma nurse with the unresolved fear of a hereditary disease hanging over her head.

Wendy Smith is an exceptional trauma nurse in the E.R. Even though she faces other people’s traumas every day, she is still unwilling to face the results of her test for the hereditary Huntington’s mutation. She watched her vibrant mother die at a young age and refuses to risk passing the disease on so she has built a wall around her heart and never becomes involved in relationships for more than one night stands.

Dr. Tom Faber is the O.B. doctor on call when Wendy’s sister-in-law delivers her twins. Besides long hours at the hospital, Tom has recently received custody of his twelve year old daughter after the death of his ex-wife. They are both struggling to connect. When he finds out Wendy has been helping with his daughter’s counseling and has a connection with her, he asks for her help without violating their privacy. Wendy agrees to help knowing how hard it is to lose a parent at that age.

Wendy and Tom are instantly attracted to each other and each have reasons to take it slower, but they just cannot stay away from each other. Wendy wants to help this perfectionist doctor learn to accept that not everything can be planned and perfect, especially in his relationship with his daughter. Tom wants to help Wendy face her fear of her test results and have a real relationship with her. Will they be able to move forward past their individual fears and come together as a family?

I found Wendy and Tom’s romance well written, but too short. I feel the issues they were both dealing with deserved a more in-depth story. This author did a very good job though of taking several heavy issues and fitting them into this shorter format. The sex scenes are explicit, but short and not gratuitous. This is an easy-to-read, heartwarming story with interesting characters that keeps you emotionally involved throughout.

  • Finding her Forever Family is a stellar medical romance. Heartbreaking? YES. Heartwarming? YES.

The story set in a hospital is about nurse Wendy Smith and Dr. Tom Faber and is an unexpected twist on a love story. Wendy lost her mother to a hereditary disease at a young age and that has formed who she is as a woman. She has sworn off love as she doesn't want to leave a family the way her mother left her.

Dr. Tom (as I like to call him in my head) has gotten custody of his 12 year old daughter after her mom overdoses.

This book deals with heavy issues but the author seamlessly intertwines them with a love story you won't soon forget.

The characters are memorable and the plot complex. This story will leave you remembering these people. I did not want this book to end. Highly recommend it!
  • The story about nurse Wendy Smith, and Dr. Tom Faber is a touching, sweet, at times heartbreaking but also heartwarming story.
Wendy lost her mother to a devastating disease at a young age. A disease that is hereditary and has molded the woman she is today.
Tom has just gotten custody of his twelve year old daughter after his ex overdoses. Sam only heard bad things about her dad and not only has she lost her mom, but she’s been uprooted from everything she knew. to live with a father she doesn’t know.
Will the three of them take a chance at opening their hearts and finding hope and love, or will fear make them miss the best things of life?
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
