Can't Let Go A Domestic Thriller Old Money Murder Book 1 edition by Alison Claire Grey Alison Grey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • This is a quick easy read, built around old secrets, friendships, betrayals and lies. The main character, Larkin, marries into one of the most privileged families of Charleston high society. Larkin comes from a poor background and doesn't fit in--until she's befriended by Caroline Beaufain, the queen bee of the social scene. Although the book doesn't really take off until the middle, the beginning is far from draggy. The author has a way of introducing characters and setting scenes that kept me flipping pages, even as I was waiting for the hammer to fall.

This is a psychological thriller, so don't expect explosive action. It's more about figuring out what each character has to gain and what they're willing to do to achieve their goals. When the impact does hit, the fallout is quick and jaw-dropping. I won't say I've never seen this plot done before, but the way Grey handles it is riveting and fresh. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author!
  • I really loved this book! I started reading it intending to just read a chapter or two before I went to bed, and ended up reading it in one sitting because I had to know what happened next. It's a fast-moving story, but not in an action thriller way--what I found fascinating was the friendship dynamics and the peek into the old money, glamorous world of Charleston. The author's writing itself drew me in and captured the feel of the city and these people so well. This was a new author for me and I'm looking forward to reading more from her.
  • I mostly completely steer away from suspence novels and/or thrillers since I want to be able to sleep at night.
This one just made me want to keep on reading until I finished it. And aside from being deeply unnerved by the way some people treat each other and some of the unveiled secrets, I know that I’ll be able to sleep tonight.

I really liked Larkin, she felt real with a lot of depth. She was vulnerable, kind, stong and devoted all at the same time. We see the story unfold through her eyes while she’s sucked into a plan for revenge for a very old, unfair, cruel wrong that had nothing to do with her in the first place. She’s sucked into someone else’s cruel machinations without knowing that she’s a pawn.

This book moved me, kept me engaged and I truly enjoyed reading it.
I just know that I never, ever want to live in a Southerntown in the USA if this is how certain people are still treating each other.
  • I read this in two nights because I didn't want to put it down. I loved the Charleston setting and the glimpse into the lives of the privileged families there. The writing was so well done that I kept hearing the main character's voice in my head as I read. I hope this comes out in audio soon!
  • This book kept my interest. Good character development. I liked the fact that it takes place in my family hometown, Charleston! I could imagine moving around the city along with the intriguing characters!
I do wish that the editing was better. It troubles me when I stumble in my reading because of misused words (ie "laying" when it should be "lying"), and sentences that miss a subject or a verb, or run on sentences.
Needs better editing, for the book to be fully engaging.
I look forward to reading more from Alison Grey.
  • Totally addictive! I kept trying to figure out the mystery but the author was always one (or several!) steps ahead of me. Loved this.
  • I was really hooked. This is a hard-to-put-down type of story! The suspense! Oh my goodness! The end is great!
  • This is far from being a thriller. It's more of an episode of Real Housewives of Charleston gone bad. In the end there are no likable characters despite the author's attempt to try to redeem a few of them in the end.
